PORT VALE FOOTBALL CLUB GENDER PAY GAP REPORT - 2023

This is our second Gender Pay Gap Report for Port Vale Football Club, that has been produced in response to the UK Government’s requirement to analyse and report on any gaps in pay or reward between genders.

Our report illustrates the position for Port Vale Football Club as at March 2023 for our entire club.  The results of our analysis show that there was a mean gender pay gap within the club of 46.17%.

WHAT IS THE GENDER PAY GAP?

The gender pay gap is a comparison of the average pay for men and women irrespective of their roles.  This is different to equal pay for doing the same roles.

GENDER PAY GAP REPORTING IS PRODUCED VIA TWO DIFFERENT MEASURES
  • A MEAN AVERAGE

Involves adding up all the numbers and dividing the result by how many numbers were in the list.

  • A MEDIAN AVERAGE

Involves listing all the numbers in numerical order. If there is an odd number of results, the median is the middle number.  If there is an even number of results, the median will be the mean of the two central numbers.

GENDER PAY GAP RESULTS

Snapshot data from a point in time in 2023, incuding men’s first team players, shows the Club’s mean gender pay gap was 46.17% and the median gender pay gap was 0%.  There were two bonuses issued to women working in the club (1.89%), an increase on zero from 2022, whereas 22.73% of men working in the club were in receipt of a bonus.  We acknolwedge that the inclusion of the men’s first team players pay data significantly widens the gap.  Therefore, we have looked at the data with the players removed.  This show that 10.22% of men working in the club were in receipt of a bonus.

We recognise and acknowledge the reasons why the pay gap exists.  As a club, we have considerably more men (67.48% of the workforce) working at the club compared to women (32.52%).

It is our belief that our gender pay gap does not stem from paying men and women differently for the same or equivalent work.  Rather it is the result of the roles in which men and women work within Port Vale Football Club and the salaries that these roles attract.

There is no quick fix to the representation issue.  This challenge is faced across the football industry and one we are not immune to at Port Vale FC.

ACTIONS TO UNLOCK PROGRESSION AND INCLUSION FOR ALL STAFF MEMBERS

We offer a very flexible working environment for all our staff, recognising the importance of being able to create a working rhythm that works for both the employee and the club, accounting for staff personal commitments outside of work.

To increase the awareness and understanding of the roles available within football, we continue in our participation in local recruitment fairs open to the public and some specifically aimed at those still in education.

We continue to be proactive in accepting applications for work experience and offering rotations around different departments to offer insight into the different roles at the club.
